I have found a consistent on this machine for losing the preview pane. I can minimize with no ill effect. However, if I just move to a folder with over 3000 posts, the preview pane is history/gone. It is also gone for any folder from that point onward. My fix that consistently works is to use the View > Windows split mode> any option. Then I can go back to my original split mode (full width pre-view) and everything is back to normal, and the weird part is I can then pull up the folder with over 3000 messages and the preview pane works just fine.
