The DNS server could be anything.

Generally you'll find the below:

Home networks - The DNS servers will be set to your ISP's DNS servers.
Small business - Same as above
Medium business - Usually use their ISP's DNS, but may have an
                  internal DNS with forward lookups to their ISP's
                  DNS.
Large business - Usually run their own internal DNS, but still use
                 their ISP's DNS servers for forward lookups. They'll
                 usually cache DNS lookups for domains outside their
                 network once they've done the initial forward lookup
                 off their ISP.


Hmmm. Rereading your post, I'm wondering if you meant to say that the
DNS server would be a machine local to that network.

If so, sorry, my misunderstanding.
