Second answer on this:

I re-installed beta v. 3.61.12 to test what happens if I don't drag
the pane.

If it has not been dragged after installing this beta, it does not
disappear.

However, it behaves as if always external.

I can't have it in a split window of the message editor, on the left.
It covers my text if I do that.

When I position it on the right and re-size it to accommodate several
attachments, it does remember the size and position relative to my
body text within the editor window.

But if I open a new message with not much body text and therefore
smaller vertical height, the attachment pane is half within the editor
window and half out on the monitor screen. I write messages within
sized windows that are not full screen, so that I can cascade the
folder view of the message I'm replying and TB!'s main window behind
my editor window, with just enough visible that a quick click of the
cursor will change the focus among the cascaded windows.

It's as if the attachment pane is now in permanent external position
mode.

When the pane first disappeared, I thought that maybe one of my
cascaded windows was overlaying it, so I minimized everything, but
that didn't help. Once dragged, the attachment actually disappears
until TB! is closed and re-launched.

Even if this new way is working as designed, it is sufficiently
inconvenient to me that I will stay with v. 3.61.11 unless a fixed
attachment pane in a split-editor-window fashion is available to me.

I will keep on making tests of future betas, until an msi comes along
that makes it hard for me to get back to a version that displays the
attachment pane the way it's convenient for me.

But I'm not going to use an attachment pane that disappears as soon as
it is dragged to another position, and keeps on disappearing whether
or not any future dragging is done.
