While I share your thoughts about the subject, I think we must keep apart
reality and wishful thinking. :-)

HTML email is here, and (I fear) it will stay. TB should deal with it,
because some people prefer HTML for whatever reason, or simply have to use
it because their business contacts use it.

Well, indirectly - thats the point. You have a choice with TB's template
system, and can satisfy each correspondents individual needs of "style" -
as long as you don't need to handle HTML messages...
