When TB! loads, it updates the message index file for all subscribed folders. So if you haven't loaded TB! in a while, it may well have quite a few index files to update with many entries. ThunderBird and Becky work in a similar way, though they'll leave the index rebuilds until you access the folders. OTOH, Mulberry doesn't do this.
