It was Steve who really sensitized me to the fact that most spammers
do not send mail addressed to you personally.

On this basis, I created filters for the discussion list mail, I
create filters for announcement type mail that I subscribe to, i.e.,
newsletters and the like. I filter messages from family and friends.
After this sequence I create a filter to filter all messages addressed
to me personally and these go to my inbox. The rest of mail left
unfiltered at this point is mail that is not addressed to me
personally and that I have made no subscription to. These are spam
messages almost invariably, unless it's a new software version
announcement for which you have a registered copy. Messages from my
ISP gets in the spam folder as well but I don't mind. Things will slip
through and this is why I don't delete these messages but place them
in a spam folder and set them to be marked as read as part of the
filtering process. I then check them intermittently.

So the filters are listed as such:

1. Discussion list filters
2. Announcement and newsletter subcription filters
3. Family and Friends
4. Inbox filter for messages addressed to me.
5. Filter for rest of messages to go to spam folder.
