(Not short)

Hello fellow TBUDL subscribers:

I'm aware that changing the file location of my messages is as
simple as editing an account's properties, choosing Files &
Directories and browsing to the new location. (That's easy enough).

However (I've done this but don't recall): Do I have to
manually move the messages already there to the new location in
order to keep them together?

If so, that will take a LOT of time, as the file structure is much
more elaborate and the quantity of messages much greater now than it
was before.

Is there a way to move the whole tree intact to the new partition?
(If I were to do that in WinExplorer and put them in the same
location as I indicated in the account properties, would TB! accept
that? I guess I could back up and find out).

Basically, I want to separate my data from the applications using
separate partitions, and my present partitions are full. A new &
bigger hard drive will be installed shortly.

My problem is this: I don't want to go to very large partitions,
because if I stay with FAT (the win95a OS installed won't support
FAT32 & in any case, I'm told that doing so would slow this old
machine down a lot anyway). But with FAT, bigger partitions create
larger cluster sizes, and larger cluster sizes cause a greater
percentage of wasted space in the partition. The data presented
below refers to the space needed when re-sizing partitions
dynamically (with data on them). But the space wasted is the same
either way (varying only with the number of files), when using FAT.

The following table approximates the amount of unused space
necessary to resize a partition within the listed size ranges. The
actual amount of unused space needed can vary, depending on the
number and sizes of the files in the partition.

Partition Size | Required | % Wasted | Space needed
                     Cluster Space for Resize
                     Size

  128-255 MB | 4 KB | 4% | 5.1 MB
  256-511 MB | 8 KB | 10% | 25.6 MB
  512-1023 MB | 16 KB | 25% | 128.0 MB
  1,024-2,047 MB | 32 KB | 40% | 409.6 MB
  2,048-4,096 MB | 64 KB | 50% | 1024.0 MB

I'm now running 10 510 mb partitions and guess I'll have to go up to
1022 mb partitions, and waste 15% more disk space (w/ 16 kb
clusters) than the 10% waste that occurs w/ 8 kb clusters. (I was
going to use 2 gb partitions, but that means using 32 kb clusters &
wasting 40% of the space, if many small files are written (too
much - but 500 mb is too small now, particularly if data isn't
separated). I guess it depends on whether the tree can be moved in
Explorer and picked up by TB! I could try it, but figured I'd post
this first.

I'd rather avoid having to build a whole new file tree in the new
partition and manually moving the messages folder by folder and hope
On of you can shed more light on the subject. On principle, I WOULD
prefer to separate the OS's from the applications and both from the
data.
