When I saw George's message about "Now that I finally can delete attachments without
fear.... ",
I felt like making these comments:

I'm presently subscribed to a list where most of the mail is HTML. I
read only the plain text versions because I get to read with a
consistent background, font, font size and font colour. I tried reading
the HTML versions of the list traffic once and lasted a few minutes. One
message would have a white background with tiny text where I have to be
leaning forward to decipher it. Another would have tiny text in bright
blue with the quotes red on a yellow background. It was an absolute
fiasco and extremely uncomfortable. Even the other members were
complaining about some of the font choices. Simple plain text avoids the
complaining because you can read the way *you* want to and not how the
sender wants you to. Why waste bytes to create such confusion and
discomfort for your audience.
If you take a look at the mail coming from this list you'll quickly see
the problems with HTML mail on a discussion list.
