They're for automatically highlighting defined groups of messages -
for example, all the observation reports I get are highlit red and
bold when unread, which is reasonably useful :)

To use them you do two things:

(i) use Options | Message List Colours to set a colour definition up;

(ii) use Account | Sorting Office/Filters to apply that colour
definition to a (sub)set of the incoming messages.

An example (my folders, naming conventions etcetera) - to colour all
incoming messages for this list purple, with unread ones in bright
purple and bold text:

(i) Group name = [tbudl], handle = 1, colour of read = Purple, colour
of unread = Fuchsia, all other settings unchanged.

(ii) Filter name = [tbudl], Move to folder Inbox/Lists/[tbudl],
Actions | Set the message's colour group = ticked, dropdown box below
= [tbudl]

The only slight problem (?) is that messages already filtered without
the colour group set up don't change colour group automatically; you
have to drag them back to Inbox and then do Re-filter messages (right
mouse butto from Inbox folder in pane).

There are doubtless other ways of using colour groups, but the above
is what I do.
