OK - I just rebooted the computer and now it's happening again. When
I try to actually send the message (which has an attachment sent to it
via MAPI from Word 2000, under NT4 sp6A 320 megs RAM), a window pops
up. The top bar says "The Bat!" and there's a red circle with a white
"X" in it. The text says:

Access violation at address 00683B1E. Read of address 000007DB.

Subsequent attempts to send this message, or even to close The Bat!,
generate similar messages. If I then fire up Task Manager and tell it
to forcibly shut down The Bat!, the message I get is the same, though
with different numbers:

Access violation at address 005A6DDE. Read of address 00000244.

If I then wait a few seconds, Nt pops up its little message about the
program not responding, and do I want to end task now. Choosing yes
shuts down The Bat! (the only way I can seem to do it once this has
occurred).

This is very, very weird. Does it perhaps matter that The Bat! is
installed in a folder with the compressed attribute set to "on"?
