Actually one presentation for non-threaded and one for each
threading method.

DG> How, specifically, would one implement this?

One would arrange the columns for each threading permutation. Select
non-threaded; arrange columns. Select "Thread by reference"; arrange
columns; Select "Thread by subject"; arrange columns - and so on.

Now just use Alt-0, Alt-1, Alt-2 etc to select the view on-the-fly.

DG> Can this be done? How?

Not really, because you are only given one "Default column settings"
per account. Of course, you could have an account for lists and an
account for the others. One of these accounts need only be a dummy
account as a filter target. Other than that, just use Alt-1
threading for the most part and switch to unthreaded with Alt-0 on
demand.
