I agree, and I understand the implications of using a self-siged cert. I am able to 
use certificates issued by Thawte etc. but this problem/bug/whatever only seems to 
occur when i try and use the self-signed certificates.

When you say "I have done" do you mean you were able to generate your own certificate 
using TB! feature without the errors I experienced?
