You could put the destination folder for your archived messages under "normal deletion" instead of under "alternative deletion" and not tick "Use alternative deletion for purging this folder." Then any message you selected and hit DELETE (without SHIFT) would be archived as well. Depends on what behaviour you want - I probably would forget to press SHIFT when deleting, so I'd end up archiving some spam as well.
