Q: What companies could I work at?
A: Technical writers work at all major corporations, and many
smaller companies.

Q: What fields can I work in?
A: Just about any field you have interest in. Tech writers are
used across the board in all industries and fields.

Q: How much does a technical writer make?
A: Salaries vary depending on what company you work for, what field
you're in, and what type of documentation you're creating. Some
technical writers make $100,000 or more working for large corporations
in metropolitan areas, while others make much less working for smaller
companies in more remote locations. Like any job, salary is only one
component of your total job satisfaction.

Technical writers often freelance or work on contracts, which usually
pay considerably higher hourly rates, but you need to consider the
"benefits package" that you give up when working this way. Things like
insurance, 401K -- all of these are handled differently aren't available
when you freelance or contract. Freelancers, working on a 1099, must
pay their own taxes, so you must withhold a certain percentage to pay
quarterly taxes.
