I think at least some token ring interfaces don't support promiscuous
mode - and I seem to remember hearing that about some Madge token ring
adapters.

says that for the Madge "Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode Mk2 (20-01)"
For promiscious[sic] capture, must enable "promiscious[sic] mode
support" (or "Statistics Gathering mode") in the adapter
properties and reboot.
and says similar thinks for other Madge adapters.
