I think at least some token ring interfaces don't support promiscuous
mode - and I seem to remember hearing that about some Madge token ring
adapters.

Unfortunately, if you follow the "Search the knowledgebase" link on
Madge's on-line knowledge base site:

        http://kbase.madge.com/

you go to the page

        http://kbase.madge.com/cssearch.htm

which says, err, umm

        Welcome to http://www.worm.com !

              Hacked By Chinese!

Alert, alert, Code Red, Code Red....

However, the page at

        http://www.wildpackets.com/support/hardware/tokenpeek

says that for the Madge "Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode Mk2 (20-01)"

For promiscious[sic] capture, must enable "promiscious[sic] mode
support" (or "Statistics Gathering mode") in the adapter
        properties and reboot.

and says similar thinks for other Madge adapters.
