Dawn's post gave you the most relevant data, but I thought I'd pass this link along as well. You can find a lot of data & reports on The Bureau of Justice Statistics web site (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/).
The Handbook of Criminal Justice Statistics compiles a ton of data on this, but I can no longer find a link to the online edition. Does anyone out there have the URL? It didn't turn up in a quick google search.
