This trend is deeply troubling to me. Many students need to use laptops in class because of physical or learning disabilities. If laptops are banned in class, these students will either (a) avoid using the technology that they need in order to learn or take notes, or (b) will become immediately obvious and singled out to all the other students. I think there have to be better solutions than this one, which is extremely discriminatory and ableist.
I would think that as sociologists we would be more sensative to the politics of inequality. But, then, disability is always the last frontier, as evidenced by how few instructors include disability in courses or course sections on inequality, stratification, discrimination, and prejudice.
