I am revamping my Intro Soc course for the Fall, and I am hoping to
find ways to better engage students in our discussion of culture, which
happens early in the semester and is the foundation of so many other
concepts we discuss. I find that students understand the variation of
cultural norms and values, but they still tend to approach other ways
of life as strange or wrong. I was wondering if any of you have
suggestions for videos that might encourage them to rethink this
approach. I have heard about documentaries that depict how people from
other cultures view our own practices (such as putting braces on our
childrens' teeth) as bizzare, but I have been unable to locate any.
However, any video that depicts different ways of life to demonstrate
that there is not a "natural" or "right" way might be effective. Any
thoughts?
