Do not confuse the studio with a stage..... or all art as performance    Do you claim that music is fiction......
What instrument do you play?  Do you claim that all concerts are lectures?

I may have been misquoted.....but so be it.
As a fiction writer, painter, and photographer I take exception.  While artists were among the first scientists.... painters doing light experiments

own place.....the studio.....sociologists can learn from that as an alternative to the lecture ......

If the performance of music--classical, jazz, bluegrass, rock, you name it--isn't in your "sage on a stage" category, I don't know what is.  Concerts are lectures by another name.
