Our district secretary has a networked HP LJ2430dn printer. She prints to it
directly by IP address. For years, when she prints checks she puts the
checks in drawer 3 and they print just fine.

Suddenly the system has decided to do her printing out of Tray 2. I've tried
different settings in the printer (paper type, etc.) and I've tried telling
the Windows printer to print to Tray 3. Nothing changes. If Tray 2 is empty,
it'll print from Tray 3, but that's about it. Also, if I tell it explicitly
to print to Tray 3 in the printer properties dialog box when printing or
through the Print & Fax in the Control Panel, it just resets itself to
autoselect. Meanwhile, the preference in the printer is to use the requested
tray exclusively.

For now I have her doing the obvious and putting her checks in Tray 2, or
just leaving Tray 2 empty. However, I'd like to understand what's happening
here, because this just doesn't make any sense. Anyone run into this kind of
thing before?
