My $0.02: Nowadays less people use AUTH_SYS for NFS. So I wouldn't focus on some highly refined handling of distinguished groups. People also often rely on groups being a list, not some unordered set. Sorting by gid may conflict with such assumptions. Prior art suggests that the 'distinguished groups' are simply the first entries in the group list.
