My college class students and I just completed a build-out of a PC based server cluster to demonstrate this..

We converted to all 1U rack-mount chassis, using PIII and P4 motherboards... 256 to 1G ram for each CPU
Converted all to water-cooling, using a single large 12V pump, a triple-fan radiator (3 120mm fans) with fan controller
Converted all to 12V dc based supplies (mini-box dc-dc supplies from 80w to 200w)
Built 4 systems (apache server, multi-media file server, jboss app server, mysql database server)
8 port KVM
8 port 10/100/1000 switch
19" lcd monitor
primary firewall server with its own small pump and radiator

All running off a power control panel for a yacht.(so we could monitor the voltage and current draw)

With all systems, the water pumps, fans running (idling), the power panel shows 11A draw at 12V.  With the LCD monitor on, and JEE applications running against the databases and pulling image files, we peak out at 16.

ALL other power the systems used to use (200 to 500w standard PC power supplies) was just going up in heat!

Our next project is to move to solar arrays to charge a battery bank and take this "off the grid".

I would love to see other folks do more research into this and see if we can't all help the whole industry to Stop The Waste and Save The Planet!

Louis
