This may get some chuckles, but I've had decent luck using Crashplan's
free client to back up some small offices with diverse systems to a
linux server. You don't get snapshots over time, but if all you need
is an additional copy for backup, it's quite flexible and open to
expansion offsite for free, or with their seeding service to their
datacenter. In the past I've thought it was too "simple" for a
business server environment (is that bad? :-) ), but it's always in
the back of my mind as an option.
No chuckles from me. While I use rdiff-backup for the servers I manage,
my home computers (mix of Macs, Windows, Linux) and my work laptop
(Windows) are all backed up by CrashPlan (Pro). Works like a charm,
restored perfectly every time I've had to. And the all-you-can-eat
annual price can't be beat. (By the way, switched from Mozy after I
discovered that restoring from it was incredibly painful on a Mac, and
the customer service was nonexistant - at least at the time that I
switched a few years ago.). Re. the work laptop - in theory we have
Symantic System Recovery in place - but it only works when logged into
the VPN, yada, yada - just use my personal CrashPlan account.
