Why would windows attempt to use port 80 (webdav) instead of port 445 (samba/smb/cifs) to connect file explorer to a UNC path?

I had this exact problem with exactly two Windows XP systems about 5 years ago, when connecting to a NetApp. I had 100 systems that worked fine and two that did this. It was bizarre. I'm sorry to say that I never found a successful solution, but you can review a few of the suggestions that I got at http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/netapp/toasters/10342 . The 'network provider order' hint seemed promising, but no joy here. I wish you better luck!
