From the data-sheet for the current DSR line:

http://www.avocent.com/uploadedFiles/Avocent_Resources/Data_Sheets/DS_Series/0309-DSR-DS-EN.pdf

"Multiplatform client support (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris)"

which jives with my experience, and with Clif's as well. It's using Java to do what it needs to do, in a platform-neutral manner.

I've had Avocent devices that I could use as a client from Linux, but to operate (for things like uer authentication), they needed windows servers to run their proprietary app.

It's possible that the older unit you have isn't compatible, or that the firmware that's installed on it isn't compatible (but if you could get current firmware it might be).

But if you're talking about "buying new", you can't discount Avocent products on their platform issues. And (from my experience) you certainly shouldn't disqualify them based on quality, because they've been rock solid for me.

I think it may be the older units, I got a DSR2161 off of eBay. It does not appear to have any sort of web ui that I can find by scanning or in the manual I found on their site. The seller failed to provide the software, from what I can tell, Avocent charges an arm and a leg for a new copy.

I'd prefer to find a new device that is more platform neutral.

We use a Avocent DSR2035. I connect to it's web interface from OSX and then connect to consoles via Java. It works like a charm.

Hello Folks,

I am looking for recommendations for an IP KVM with 8 or 16 ports that can be managed via a web interface, and is supported from Linux and/or OSX.

So no proprietary Windows applications *cough* Avocent *cough* or ActiveX controls.

Any info will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Brandon
