I mainly like the simplicity. It is dead simple to set up and keep
running.

The performance difference would be due to TCP/IP overhead which is
readily calculable. But if you aren't saturating your links anyway you
won't really notice. However, if you ever find yourself using or
considering the use of a TCP Offload Engine (TOE) which seems popular
in iSCSI circles then you might consider the performance advantages of
a storage protocol which does not require such tricks and added
complexity/expense.
