Is your mailer not set to auto wrap lines? What are you using, Pine? :P It is not because of *my* applications I prefer the settings I do. We're on the same page when it comes to that. It is due to thousands of other designers out there don't know/care enough to send the proper headers. With this being the case, I choose the lowest common denominator and I no longer have to support someone else's poorly designed site.
I think we strayed a little bit from the original author's question. Perhaps he can just try what I suggested and, if that solves the problem, he is free to implement the caching headers. Yes, I do support a rather large community using our service, and everything works just as expected because our server sets expiry/nocache on select pages properly. Seriously, if you're building an app that expects pages to be fetched every time, then your server should say so when it delivers the pages.
