I'm a little disappointed to see that this didn't happen. I cooked up some new autotools files for building Tesseract as shared libraries (using libtool) and I'm keen to see this hit the main Linux distributions so that other projects may link to it properly. However, the distributions (admittedly only Gentoo so far) are reluctant to accept these changes unless they are committed upstream. This upstream appears very much dead but I'm not prepared to take responsibility for a fork myself. If someone else is, that's great, but I'd like to be somewhat confident that they won't just drop it in the same way, even if it is just for minor improvements.
