The camera to be used totally depends on your requirements. You mentioned those images comes from a production line! How fast is that line moving? Just ask few more questions to yourself about Frame Rate, resolution (these needs depend on your pre-processing step) , Dimensions and interface (IEEE 1394 or USB). Budgetary constraints, yes. Other design question, If the camera has to work in-sync with other sensors, so we might require an API to support or manipulate its intrinsic/extrinsic parameters and so on. Quite the contrary, such inscriptions are usually clearly readable. Indeed, I'd suggest to concentrate more on shooting conditions than on image processing. It is difficult to devise algorithms dealing with images that humans themselves can hardly read. Adjust lighting conditions, improve camera stability, increase exposure, adjust focus. Flash sometimes can be useful, but usually is not. Maybe you need to change your whole camera device to gain more control over shooting settings. Only having done all this, you can start to invent your preprocessing logic.
