Hmm.  So your characters are almost 480 pixels high then?  Maybe
that's the problem.  At 300 dpi, characters in a 12 pt font would
be about 50 pixels high.  Try shrinking your image by a factor of
10 to produce letters in the pixel size that tesseract works well
with and see if that helps.
