Hi Alan, As Shree Devi Kumar pointed out, there are other graphical options for Tesseract which you might have more luck with. There's a list at http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/3rdParty
Good luck with your gradual move over to Linux. If you decide to get comfortable with the command line, Tesseract is the kind of thing that you can quite easily save a lot of time by running from the command line.
