The man page for updmap is not consistent with the behaviour of updmap:

1. VARTEXMF in the man page should be TEXMFVAR

2. The man page states that the output tree is selected by trying
VARTEXMF (which should be TEXMFVAR), the tree where the configuration
file was found, and last TEXMFMAIN. However, it seems that if TEXMFVAR
is not writable, updmap does not try any other directories. Would it be
possible to change this? (In my case, I set TEXMFCONFIG to a private
tree, writable by me, and had the configuration file in that tree. I
then expected the map files to end up in that tree as well.)

Otherwise everything seems to work fine on my Fedora Core 3 system.
