2.99.12 seems to be working perfectly. I was having a problem with 2.99.9 which went away, but I'm not sure why. beamer requires pgf which are both included in 2.99.9 texmf, but beamer was not finding pgf for some reason. Anyways, 2.99.12 has cleared that up.
