Hard coded??  This may look so for any new user of TeX/LaTeX,
but beside the base engine is nothing hard coded and even
if you may find a way to avoid the builtin macros ;^)

For a new user: Search for a appropiate style and read the
docs. For all the others: write your own style with a side
look into the original one ;^)
