You cannot assume that everything from the 1880's and 1890's was for the best, because idiomatic piano music came to dominate the industry. That led to the reintroduction of Gutenburg's quarter rest, for example, a backward step. The notation of tuplets is also unfinished business.
Unfortunately, neither Stone nor Read were very competent. I *know* that you are a lot smarter than they are, so you're on your own. For pete's sake, *look at* the guitar music of the *early* 19th century. There have been some improvements since then, but some of the changes have been for the worse.
