ps2pdf is a wrapper script for ghostscript, so you definitely need it
(gs, that is).  sometimes, tex output uses fonts that gs provides, but
it shouldn't be necessary in a modern tex distribution (all of which
provide themeans to embed the gs fonts directly in the postscript
output).
