To be fair, if there are movement breaks, there is a minor issue with setting the number of bars per system: You can’t effectively set a movement break when in this mode, because you have to tell PMX what system number it goes in. The solution is simply to leave out the movement break command(s) until you have input the whole score. Then decide how many total systems you want, and switch to the defined-number-of-systems-and-pages mode.

I use a batch script to do compilations so I forget. Also, there really no reason not to delete both mx1 and mx2 before recompiling. There are two different ways that PMX can control line breaking, as explained quite clearly in the PMX manual. The first is to specify in the header exactly how many systems you want (nsyst). You also then have to set npages to the exact number of pages you want. The second way, which is best used when you are first inputting a score, is to set the number of bars per system. You do this by setting npages = 0 and nsyst = number of bars per system. PMX will then figure out how many total systems and pages to use. --Don Simons From: TeX-Music [mailto:tex-music-boun...@tug.org] On Behalf Of Ewan Delanoy Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2013 7:41 AM To: Werner Icking Music Archive Subject: Re: [Tex-music] PMX question : how to apply the "don’t worry about linebreaks till the very end" philosophy Don Simons wrote : >Sorry, it is surprising to me that you get any problem when you add th>at >line. That's not what my question was about. When you're writing a long score, sooner or later you must break a line, or the single staff on your draft will become overburdened and illegible. So what do you do then in PMX ? Don Simons wrote : > To compile, are you running the sequence pmxab => etex => musixflx => etex => > dvips ? Absolutely (although that would be pmxab - pdftex - musixflx -pdftex on my Mac with built-in support for PDF) Don Simons wrote : > Are you deleting *.mx1 before you recompile? Do you mean *.mx1 or *.mx2 ? The MusixTeX manual instructs to delete the *.mx2 file, which is what I do. Ewan
