--- Begin Message --- Popo at 17, 886 ft. asl, has been erupting, more or less, non-stop since Dec. of 1994, when Paul Fambro and I made our first attempt to climb it. Of course, the volcano activity has really been non-stop for centuries, but the last month-6 weeks it has been in the news many times. This makes the near-by volcano of Izta, at 17, 159 ft. asl also too hot to handle as the normal route to either uses the Paso de Cortez for access. If interested in climbing, Secor's Climbing Guide to the Mexico's Volcanoes is the key reference. Pico de Orizaba several hours to the east is open, at 18, 490 ft. and when we were blocked from Popo, that is what we climbed. Then, the following year we came back and did Itza, as Popo was still closed. The climbing season for all three is from Dec. to March. More info is available, but those are all high adventures, although overall, considered easy altitude, if you take your time acclimating, and perhaps do La Malinche, at 14, 600 ft. as a warm up.

I plan a month long Colorado trip in Aug.-Sept. doing 14ers in the Rockies if anyone is interested. We will spend considerable time in the Longs Peak area then move west doing 14ers off I-70, then the Lake City area, and end with La Blanca near the Great Sand Dunes.

Preston from the interior dissected plateaus of the low lands of KY....see you at the PA convention

Subject: [Texascavers] Popocatepetl

From Huffington Post an hour ago:
MEXICO CITY -- An airport serving Mexico's fourth-largest city suspended operations for seven hours because of volcanic ash from the Popocatepetl volcano.

The international airport in Puebla was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure, said Puebla airport spokesman Herbert Lopez Palma.

Palma said the airport re-opened after the ash stopped falling and the airstrips were cleaned up.

The temporary closure affected six domestic and international flights to Houston and Dallas, Texas.

The airport is east of Mexico City and about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the 17,886-foot (5,450-meter) volcano.

At the Mexico City airport, Alaska Airlines on Friday canceled its daily flight to and from Los Angeles.

Authorities said this week that a lava dome is growing inside the crater and could cause further eruptions.

I will explain below why this is a post some cavers will find of interest.

This is only for people planning to buy a new phone this year,

On my recent trips to Kiwi Sink, my fancy smartphone from Cricket Wireless
could not even send a text message once I left the town of Kyle.

The diggers who had an AT&T phone could place calls at the bottom of the
entrance drop, 28 feet below the surface.

Obviously, there are safety advantages to having cell service, especially
in a mining operation, but I also needed to stay in contact with my
business and my family.

So I went to AT&T and purchased an inexpensive but powerful phone. I left
the store only paying $ 108.

There is a lot of hoopla and hype about smartphones. I encourage you to
try the newest LG Optimus Pro G.

The huge 5 inch screen allows you to see cave maps in detail. Dale's map
of Kiwi looks fantastic on this phone.

The NSS Google+ Page and Community Page look awesome.

The calendar, and caving videos work excellent, as does Google Maps.

The new version of operating system is the best I have ever seen.

There are 2 drawbacks. 1. The choice for a protective case is lame.
2. Data plan is expensive.

So I am keeping my Cricket phone and tethering the AT&T to use Cricket's
cheaper data charges ( obviously not while at Kiwi Sink).

Other advantages to a 5 inch screen are playing games like: FreeCell,
Solitaire, Angry Birds, Pinball, etc., but also videos, and showing off
your photos, larger app icons, and text.

I have only owned the phone 24 hours, so I can not comment on the
durability or reliability of the brand, LG.

For more details, about this specific phone, email me privately in about a
week.

It has been a long time since we had a post about footwear.

There is a new shoe company that specializes in trendy boot-like tennis
shoes for the young hip crowd.

The brand is Palladium.

They specialize in canvas high-tops with a soft rubber ( like in Crocs
sandals ), but
with a choice in colors and styles of over 50, So now you can at least
look
stylish in your caving photos.

Almost all of their boots look like they would only survive one trip thru
Honeycreek.

However, they do make a some that are more rugged with Cordura and real
rubber souls:

They are sold at the Palladium Outlet Store in Houston.

Additional info:

Details of boot above:

• Bottom: One piece molded rubber outsole.
• Sockliner: Dri-Lex ® Moisture wicking covered thick molded PU creates a
super comfortable stepping ground.
• Material: Rubberized Full Grain Leather combined with a 2520 denier
Ballistic Nylon. Dri-Lex® Moisture wicking lining.
• Branding: Uniquely applied rubber patch on lateral side of both shoes and
stash pocket on the tongue.
• Features: 1. 1.8mm thickness technical heel counter. 2. Gusseted tongue.
3. High abrasion 2520 Denier Ballistic Nylon upper. 4. Size zipper ( medial
side ) with a Palladium pull. Zipper pull locked in place with a closure

I have only limited information at the moment, so I'm nervous about dispersing
it, but active caver and Greater Houston Grotto President Mallory Mayeaux has
been in some sort of accident and is currently hospitalized. Here is all I know
at the moment, contained in a message from her brother Caleb:

"I don't remember what the GHG schedule looks like or if Mal had any upcoming
trips or meetings, but Mal will be out of commission for some time. She was hit
by a car last night and is in ICU. She's stable but banged up pretty bad. I
figure y'all will know most of the stuff she had going on with caving, and can
thus plan accordingly. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
Thanks,
Caleb"

Here is what Caleb had to say a little earlier:

"She's at Memorial Herman. Maybe y'all can visit later, but she's completely
unconscious right now, and it's probably not a good idea, at least not for the
next few days. I'll keep y'all posted.

Caleb"

As for her unconscious state, I've heard from a cousin of hers that it is a
medically-induced coma. I've had first hand experience of being in one of
those, and I know they are done to manage treatment of one kind or another, so
we shouldn't be unduly concerned that she is not conscious - but we should
continue to keep thinking positively.

Thanks to Galen and Ellie for a great trip to Whirlpool Cave in Austin! I had
never been there, and decided to try it:) Pushed this older caver's body into
doing things not done in 20-30 years, and truly had a great time:) The pain and
colorful evidence of body meeting rock are awesome, and might create some
interesting comments at work tomorrow! Thanks to all on trip for a wonderful
day of caving and friendship:)

Bonus to beginning of trip - chatting with Gill Ediger at meet up for trip.
Bonus at end of trip - having long time caver friend Barb Vinson, husband, and
son sit down at table next to us at Threadgill's south! Had a great catch up
chat, and she gave me some arnica for my already colorful arms:) Thanks Barb!

All in all, another amazing day of caving for the memory book:)
