For those of you who haven't seen it, today "Bing" has highlighted a lot of
articles on the closures. There're a lot of duplicate articles, but it's
interesting that there are so many general and scientific news organizations
emphasizing this. See:

Subject: [Texascavers] Region 3 USFS cave closures are official :
For those that don't keep up with the Rockies caving scene, the USFS has
officially closed their Region 3 caves for a 12 month period in response to the
WNS situation. The states affected by the closure are Colorado, Wyoming, South
Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. For more information, see:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/wns/index.shtml
Note that the FAQ on the above site contains the most relevant information to
cavers. The details of what constitutes permissible research and other closure
exemptions have not been worked out.

Anybody out there have a lot of experience with rental
cars ?
If you were going to rent a car to go on a 4,300 mile
road-trip over a 2 week period, which rental company
would you go with?
I presume spending ~ $ 350 to rent a car is a better
idea, than driving up there in my old car. [ My old
car could obviously break down and have to be towed
to a shop and spend a few days in the shop while
I have to get an expensive hotel. Plus my paying
riders would be ticked off. ( I thought that up ! )]
Are there any secrets to getting a good deal this
late?
Obviously, I have to get one with unlimited mileage.
( I thought that up, also ! )
The general consensus is that I should not
drive my car to Vermont. My plan to ride up there
in a Geo Metro is still on the table, but renting a car
for a one way trip home is far more higher than I could have
imagined ( I thought to check into that before leaving town !! )
Hope to see a few of you there. Still stuck in Houston.
Cheers,
David Locklear

Seriously, dude, you have spent more time and energy agonizing over getting to
convention than I did buying my first home. Go buy a bus ticket! Make it
easier and safer for yourself, and JUST GO.

David,
Were I renting a vehicle I would use Enterprise Leasing. However, what happened
to your fairly new and most economical Honda Fit? For the money you will spend
(waste) on a rental vehicle you could buy four new tires and a tune-up and
maybe have money left over for other needed repairs. Do you still own it and
what is its status? Advice from a conservative geezer who isn't making the trip.

David,
You may want to try National, they are one of the few "national" car rental
firms left that isn't franchised and didn't have an outrageous drop off fee.
At least that is what I remember when I was a road dog.
Anyway, check for coupons and deals though your airlines, they offer some very
good discounts.

Wes Skiles was given a great send off last night at Ginnie springs. Around
five hundred people came from all corners of the earth to pay their
respects to a great adventurer. There were cavers, divers, conservationists,
famous film makers, geologists, hydrologists, and other eminent scientists,
National Geographic Society bigwigs, lunatic adventurers, and throngs of
adoring women.
Wes’ best bud Pete Butt was there with tequila bottle in hand. His mouth
was still wired shut, but he was otherwise miraculously healed from the gator
attack only five weeks ago. Try to imagine a guy so tough that when the 12
foot gator had his head completely inside its mouth the gator’s tooth
broke off and stuck in his skull! There were tooth marks all over his head,
jaw
and throat yet he fought it off, swam back to shore, and lived to dive
again!
No word yet on how or why Wes died. He was only in 70 feet of water, a
puddle by his standards. It might have been a massive heart attack or stroke,
but many suspect it was his rebreather. If so he would not be the first. It
was explained to me that rebreathers scrub CO2, without a buildup of which
one’s body fails to notice the lack of Oxygen. One moment you are fine, the
next moment dreamy, then dead, a painless and anxiety free way to go.
There was enough food to feed an army, and so many coolers that it was a
real problem to find my own. Huge explosions and pyrotechnics rocked the
night. A Viking funeral boat was filled high with wood and set alight in the
middle of the run. Along about midnight the buzz was right so a small group
of us went the Devil’s eye for a dip. It was beautifully illuminated with
floodlamps. I swam out into the middle of the river far beyond the lights and
hauled up on a log for some quality time with the eelgrass and gators. I’m
sure Wes would have approved!

Folks,
If any of you were planning to take the Wilderness First Aid class being

I decided to not take anybody's advice.
I will be driving my mini-van in the direction towards Vermont.
I hope to leave the Houston area by 9 a.m. this morning ( Friday, July 30 ).
I can stop along the way to pick up 1 convention bound caver in New
Orleans-LA, Meridian-MS, Gadsen-AL, Chattanooga-TN,
Roanoke-VA, Hattiesburg-MD, Scranton-PA, Albany-NY.
I can pick up 3 cavers in upstate NY, if my car makes it that far.
That is my #1 concern, is that my old car won't
make that kind of drive.
I have 2 cells on the road: Boost-mobile-: 281-960-0687 & Sprint: 281-995-8487
My Boost-mobile does walkie-talkie at: 143*575*346
I am travelling with at least 2 strangers I am picking up that I met
on Craigslist and dropping one off near Allentown, PA.,
and in the other in Woodstock. We are going to be a travelling zoo
until I drop them off ( 2 cats, 1 dog and a couple of finches
in 2 bird cages ).
Please forward this note to any caving list serves in TAG, Virginia,
our along the route above, or any cavers you know
looking for a ride along that route.
It may not be a realistic goal to get to Essex Junction, but that is
the direction I am going to be driving in.

You may want have enough cash to fly everyone home/destination. Or at
the very least, let them know your car is on its last leg. If you are
worried your car is going to kick it, your best bet is to drop a
little bit more and greyhound it (this is better for you and the poor
saps you are driving with). Just a thought.

David,
I am most curious. EXACTLY WHAT ARE YOU DRIVING? What do you consider to be an
"old car"? Is it actually old or just old due to neglect? Good luck and don't
pick up hitchhikers. :)
