Sótano de las Golondrinas Mexico

In December 1966, Charles Borland, T.R. Evans, and Ronald Stearns were exploring the limestone mountains of central Mexico near the small town of Aquismón when, almost randomly, they discovered one of the largest and deepest caves in the world.

Four months later, in April 1967, T.R. returned leading an exploratory group to attempt a first descent. This group included John and Sandy Cole, Bill Cuddington, Bill Deane, Dan Hale, Bob Hugill, Squire Lewis, Jon Morse, Sandino Techo, Nancy Walters, and Sid West (several of whom successfully made the drop).

In June 1967, another party was organized. I was in this party with John Fish, Ed Alexander, Jonathan Davis, and Ted Peters. Our task was to conduct a plane-table and telescopic-alidade survey of the pit entrance and floor, and to precisely measure the pit's depth.

Created and produced by Dick Mitchell. Music from Armik's Album "Guitarrista". 2007.
