Hunter slays hibernating bear, gets stuck in cave
The Yomiuri Shimbun
GIFU, Japan -- A hunter was saved Saturday afternoon after shooting a
hibernating bear and getting stuck for nearly 24 hours in the bear's cave on a
mountain in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture.
The wife of forestry worker Kazuka Takada called the police after he failed
to return home after setting out to hunt bears Friday morning.
Officers from Takayama Police Station found Takada in the cave at about 2:45
p.m. Saturday with minor injuries to his leg.
The hunter had managed to keep warm by huddling together with his dog.
According to the police, Takada, 55, used a shotgun to shoot and kill a
hibernating Asiatic black bear in the cave at about 3:30 p.m. Friday. But when
he
attempted to remove the bear from the about five-meter-long cave, his body
got stuck between the floor and the ceiling of the cave.
