I first met Jim about four years before I made the move from Florida to Texas
in 1974. I attended a couple of the old Rice Grotto meetings while visiting my
paternal uncle in Houston and met him then. I went on one Hill Country caving
trip with the Houston folks that he may have been on, as well.
But I got to know this fascinating man much better after moving to Houston in
1976 and joining the Greater Houston Grotto. I was intrigued by his tales of
dirt bike-enabled pioneering caving trips in Mexico in the Sixties. And being a
space geek, I pumped him for stories about NASA's Huntsville rocket design
facility in the days of the Werner von Braun team. He remained my occasional
source of insider space news until his much lamented death, and his proposal
for a one-way Mars mission still has traction.
He will be missed by many people on many levels.

much discussed.
Jim was an incredibly interesting person. He was the first Houston caver I met.
He rode with me to my first TCR and it was the greatest road trip as Jim
regaled me with tales of his adventures caving. I'm going to miss him a lot.

Like all of you, I was shocked to receive the news of Jim’s passing.
He was an irrepressible adventurer with a extraordinary intellect.
We will certainly miss his presence in the caving community.
I don’t have too many photos of Jim but I especially like this one
(photographer unknown) taken
in his younger days on a visit to Gruta de Carrizal in November 1964.
