I believe the Selma Chalk is in that area. Some folks think that Chalk is impervious because they run tests on small plugs of material or maybe monitoring wells. However, some chalks are quite good karstic aquifers and produce a great deal of water. One of the major sources of water for London is the Great Chalk which I think also forms the great cliffs of Dover. I’ve thought there is potential for small caves in this unit for a number of years. I believe this unit also has a nationally known hazardous waste landfill that accepted waste from places throughout the southeast.
Maybe Mr. Weazel can elaborate a little more on this subject. My Google Earth karst overlay shows some karst about 50 miles north of Mobile, the nearest to Mobile being soluble limestone under <300 feet of insoluble sediments made up of things like bentonite, so probably not terrific caving... Just north of that is a narrow band of Jackson group, carbonate rocks at or near the surface. I'm guessing you are talking about this part. Sand, clay and/or mud abound in both parts. I am not familiar with part of AL but will be moving to North Alabama north of the river in the Shoals area. Of course I would like to look for caves. Not a fan of snakes, though... Care to elaborate? Jacqui J. Snakes are a thing of the past. There are caves here too but the area is almost totally unexplored in that respect. Whodathunk there were caves just north of Mobile? The first article puts snakes and snake bits into perspective and the second discusses first aid. Note the second article interchanges poisonous with venomous in the article but other than that, isn't a bad read. Note that snakes aren't poisonous and few are venomous. Since it is spring, snakes are pretty active right now so be careful out there. http://snakesarelong.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-truth-about-snakebite.html http://www.flotography.com/what-to-do-when-a-snake-bites-you-on-a-remote-trail/ Geary Schindel _______________________________________________ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com<mailto:Texascavers@texascavers.com> | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers _______________________________________________ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com<mailto:Texascavers@texascavers.com> | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers
