A fine fitting tribute from Bill, the Man of Steel, to Bill the leading expert of the local digs and caves around Austin.
Bill Russell was one of the friendliest cavers in the world. He was also a good writer as I remember reading one of his cave geology papers and was knocked over. In two weeks we are documenting two new caves in western KY we have been saving for a couple of months. One has virgen cave 50 ft. from the entrance. We will name a passage for Bill Russell in his memory. Not many know it but in Bill Russell's early caving career he caved in eastern KY in the 24 mile plus Sloan Valley Cave System. This was in the 1960's. I cannot remember what pulled Bill to KY-Dr. Barr at UK? James Redell, being at UK to study under Dr. Barr? The Army? Lou Simpson? Or, Sloan's was simply one of the longest caves in the country at that time. A Kirkwood story-one afternoon Bill Russell came over to the 1307 1/2 garage where I was working. A lot of UTG caving rope was stored in the garage. Bill pointed out that some of the rope was too close to a couple of old truck batteries. I destroyed the ropes touching the batteries. Someone said I should have saved them for vehicle towing, but I thought the risk of getting them mixed up with caving rope was too much.
