340  SATI INSISTS ON JOINING THE SACRIFICIALFESTIVAL

Long years passed withthe confrontation between son-in-law and father-in-law
continuing.   WhenBrahma appointed Daksha as the chief of        Prajapatis,
pride overtook him.  Without regard to the established preceptors, Daksha
completed thepreliminary Vajapeya and commenced the        glorious Brahma
Brihaspatisava Sacrifice Yaga.   In that sacrifice, all   the Brahmarshis,
Pitris and Devaswith their consorts were all appropriately honored.

Sati Devi, daughter ofDaksha and consort of Rudra observed the bejeweled and
sprightly consorts of Devas and others travelling in their  festive aerial
cars, joviallyconversing and thus came to know of        Dakshas Yaga.   She
told Rudra,Your father-in-law Daksha Prajapatis  Yaga is in progress.   As the
Devas are still journeying for theYaga   site, it is obvious that thesacrifice
is not concluded as yet.

My sisters accompanied by their spouses, desirous of meeting with nearand
dear, would assemble there.   I am also, in your company, desirous to
receive the gifts  clothes and ornaments  to be given by my parents.

It is a uniqueopportunity to me to enjoy the company of my sisters  together
with their husbands, parents andrelatives, as also to worship
theglorious sacrifice being conducted by the rishis, all at one place  and
time.

To you, my Lord, itposes no wonder or attraction.   To me, awoman,
tender and alien to the Tattva (truth), desireimbues to visit my  parents.
You yourself can observe the sky adornedwith the aerial  cars, filled with
jovialand sprightly couples.   O SuperiorGod!

Having learnt of thefestivity at parents home, how can the daughter resist the
desire to witnessit   Sadhus visit the homes ofhusbands,   parents, preceptors
andfriends, even though un-invited.   OEternal!

Pray oblige.   Compassion filled, as you are, it isappropriate for you   to
grant mydesire.   The all-knowing, bearing me inhalf your body   (Ardha
Naariswara  a deity, half man and half woman), praybestow on me   my ardent
wish.

Rudra Bhagavan, remembering the earlier heart-piercing abuse of Daksha,
replied to Sati Devi, O good-naturedlady!   What you have said is no  doubt
appropriate.   It fits those hosts, who would not invent   non-existing faults
in others, at thedictate of their excessive pride     and violent and vicious
nature.   Learning, austerity, wealth, comely         body, youth and noble
lineage, thoughshine as virtues, they assume  contrarytraits in uninitiated,
who are overcome with self-importance, leading toimmodesty towards the
virtuous.   Nevershould one visit the    houses of thosewho frown and cast
slant glance at their guests.   Their   effrontery pierces deeper than
fiercearrows.   To exaltedly placed DakshaPrajapati, I am aware, You are dearer
than all other daughters, but because ofhis burning  hatred for me, you will
notreceive the due       warmth (Manam) fromyour parent.   The inept but
jealous, hate the   virtuous, in the same way asAsuras hate    God.   O Comely
Lady!   The rising from seat, paying obeisance,  announcing themselves, are all
directed tothe indwelling Lord in all   and not tothe body-conscious and
pride-filled man (physical body).

When wise men showesteem to each other, it is directed to Supreme Lord, abiding
in everyonesheart.

Rudra continued, Theword Vasudeva indicates pure Sattva where Lord  resides in
and reveals Himself.  I am therefore ever engaged mentally         in saluting
Him, who is manifest inthe hearts of all.   Daksha Prajapati who at
thesacrifice of Prajapatis humiliated me with evil        words, though endower
of this body on you, isnot appropriate to be seen       by you, being my enemy.
Likewise, Dakshas followers too.

Disregarding my words,if you go, it will not do you good.   Forthose   of
established honor, insult fromone’s own fold, results in death.

341 SATIBURNS HERSELF WITH THE FIRE OF YOGA

Sati Devi felt herselfon the horns of a dilemma.   Obstructedin her   intense
desire to go, she with aclouded mind, tearful and overcome with        anger,
cast an angry look atRudra Bhagavan as if to burn him and left   for Dakshas
Yaga spot.   Seeing Sati Devi proceeding alone,Rudras         followers headed
by Nandihurriedly accompanied her.   Seated onNandi  and with full
paraphernalia inattendance, Sati arrived at the Yagasala.

Excepting for Satismother and sisters, none else out of fear for Daksha, who
himself disregardedher arrival, paid any heed to her. Noticing the neglect by
her own father andfurther humiliated by the         absenceof any position of
honor for Rudra Bhagavan in the sacrifice,    the infuriated Sati Devi looked
as thoughset to a conflagration. However, holding back Rudras followers from
attackingDaksha, she then  said in the openassembly:

You have acted as an enemy to my Lord, whohates none.   He is the   beloved
of all embodied souls.   The wise do not indulge in  fault-finding.   They
respect merit and are indifferent tofaults.   You    recognize only evil in
others. Unrighteous, men constantly reproach   virtuouspersons.   Sivas name is
hallowed and Hiscommand is   inviolable.   The utterance of his name, but
once, destroys the sins of  men.   You hate him and you have insulted him.
Thevile tongue, which   spoke disparaginglyof Siva, deserves to be sundered.
Unwholesome food   knowingly eaten has to be vomited.   I, thus, will not have
this body  born of you, a hater of Siva.   I am vile by birth.  It mortifies me
to  be called Dakshayani and therefore I shallcast off this body.

So saying, Sati silently sat down, facingnorth.   She purified herself     by
touching water and closing her eyes, adopted the yogic path, contemplated on the
lotus-like feet of her Lord and herbody was ablaze  with the fire of
yogicconcentration.

There was both skywardand earth-bound anguish, with praise for Sati and
condemnation for Daksha.

The attendants ofRudra began to attack Daksha upon which the preceptor Bhrigu,
through oblationsin the sacrificial fire, brought forth from the region of
Soma, a large host of Devas called Ribhus and theychased    away the
belligerent followersof Rudra.

342  RUDRAS ANGER AND DESTRUCTION OF DAKSHA

Rudra, on learning of the end of Sati Devifrom Narada, in his anger, pulled
out one of his matted lock and dashed it onthe ground with a loud roar. From
the matted lock, emerged the formidable formof Virabhadra, his head touching
the sky, his body black as a rain cloud, witha thousand arms, three dazzling
eyes, fierce looking fangs, hair flaming likefire and wearing a garland of
skulls. On Virabhadra seeking orders, Rudra said:You are a part of myself.
Command my entire retinue, destroy the yaga alongwith Daksha. Virabhadra felt
invincible and with trident aloft, rushed towardsDakshas yaga. The tumult and
dust, roused by Virabhadra and his followers, resembled deluge. The womenfolk
led by Dakshas wife Prasuti attributed it tothe tragedy caused by Daksha to
Sati. While the fear-stricken people werespeculating on the portents, skyward
and earth-bound, even the courageousDaksha was shaken.

Virabhadra and hisfollowers destroyed the sacrificial hall and all it
contained, killed Daksha, cut off the beard of Bhrigu and pulled out the eyes of
Bhaga and broke theteeth of Kalinga kings and Pushan who laughed when Rudra was
insulted, to theroar of Bhutas, Pretas and Pisachas disciples of Rudra.  The
routed hosts of Devas and others, who had come to Dakshassacrifice, rushed to
Brahma. Brahma and Vishnu had not attended thesacrifice anticipating the turn
of events.

Brahma told them, Evenattempts to retaliate against mighty persons would recoil
on them; what to sayof the consequences of wanton insult heaped on such a
person. Still plead withthe easily propitiated Rudra for forgiveness with a
contrite heart. The all-knowingand the all-powerful with indefinable prowess,
who Rudra is, there is no otherrecourse now available than to seek refuge in
Him.

Brahma, accompanied byprajapati and devas proceeded to Kailasa, the abode of
Rudra. After passingthrough Alakapuri, the capital of Kubera and the lotus-like
forest calledSowgandhikam, surrounded by the holy rivers Nanda and Alaka, they
found Rudra, seated under a Banyan tree of enormous proportions, engaged in
Tapas andimparting Truth to Narada and others. They paid obeisance to Rudra and
Rudrarose up from his seat to welcome Brahma.

Brahma praised Rudraand said, Great personages are ever tolerant and revenge is
far from theirthoughts. It behooves you to pity those who are overcome by
delusion Maya.Deign to complete the Yajna of Daksha overlooking that these
evil-mindedparticipants have failed to assign the position of honor to you, who
are thebestowed of the fruits of the Yajna. May Daksha, the observer of the
sacrificecome back to life. May Bhagas eyes be restored. May Bhrigu get back
his beardand Pushan his teeth. May the wounded devas and priests be restored
tonormalcy, by your grace, O Rudra! Let the whole of the remaining parts of
theYajna (Ucchishta) be made your share. May the Yajna now be completed with
yourplace of honor (share) restored.

(Ucchishta is also interpreted as the balance left overin a Yajna, e.g.
Naabhaga Rudra dialogue. Another interpretation ofSvishtakrith Svaha).

343  DAKSHA AND OTHERS REVIVED  SACRIFICE COMPLETED

Pleased with the praise of Brahma, Rudra saidthat he would overlook the lapse
of his children who were deluded by Maya. Byhis ordainment, the dead were
revived and the wounded and maimed restored tonormalcy. The only difference was
that Daksha would bear the head of a goatkeeping with Nandikeswarars curse. All
of them reassembled at the sacrificialspot of Daksha.

The Yajna was resumed.Daksha offered praises to Rudra full of serenity and
devotion, apologized forhis transgression and thanked him for his merciful
grace. Daksha then proceededto complete the sacrifice. Pious Brahmanas poured
offerings in the sacrificialfire. The Supreme Lord borne by Garuda, of
lightning-like complexion, wearing adazzling crown, countenance shining with
sparkling ear rings, bearing Conch,Chakra, Gada and Padma, Sara, Chapa, Asi and
Charman in His arms, with goddessLakshmi abiding in His bosom and adorned with
Vanamala, His gracious looks andsmiles delighting the world, with two chamaras
waving at His sides, whiteumbrella held over Him, appeared at the sacrifice,
with Brahma, Rudra , Indraand others offering Him respectful welcome.

The Ritviks, Sadasyas, Bhrigu, Brahma, Indra, Rishis andall gods in the
assemblage praised the Lord thus:

You are unassailed by any impurity. O Lord!Save us. Blindly given to rituals,
we do not understand your true nature, dueto Nandis curse. Your divine form is
sung in the three vedas.

You are the asylum ofall those fallen in Samsara, destitute of refuge/succor,
with pitfalls ofpleasure and pain, full of the wild fire of grief, and harassed
by desires.

We have set our mindon Your charming feet, which are the objects of worship of
even the liberatedand which shower blessings on Your devotees. You are the soul
and kin ofsuppliants; be gracious to us. You are the only protector of the
world, withyour eight arms ever bearing the weapons of well being of the
universe. Yourworship, which this sacrifice is, was interrupted due to offence
caused toRudra. Be pleased to purify us to continue the sacrifice. Save us with
a kindheart.

May your consort, goddess Lakshmi, bless us to complete the sacrifice. By Your
energy and light,Agni flames forth and bears the offerings soaked in ghee in
every sacrifice.

You are the supremeperson and your nectar-like stories remove illusion and
ignorance. You are thesacrifice, the offering, the fire, the Mantra and
everything in a sacrifice. The three Vedas constitute Your body. We sing Your
name, we bow to You; begracious to us.  Daksha completed thesacrifice and
waited upon Rudra with his share of the sacrifice. Rudra acceptedit willingly.

The Avabhruta(concluding) rituals were completed. All the gods were pleased and
returned totheir abodes after showering their blessings.

Sati Devi was reborn of Mena, wife of Himavan, andgiven the name of Ambika
(Parvathi) and was again wedded to Rudra Bhagavan.
