A34 It is explained in Chapter 12 in the followingslokas SLOKA 10 If youcannot practice the regulations of bhakti-yoga, then just try to work for Me,because by working for Me you will come to the perfect stage. Sometimesthe mode of goodness becomes prominent, defeating the modes of passion andignorance, O son of Bharata. Sometimes the mode of passion defeats goodness andignorance, and at other times ignorance defeats goodness and passion. In this way there is alwayscompetition for supremacy. SLOKA 14 When one diesin the mode of goodness, he attains to the pure higher planets of the greatsages. SLOKA 15 When onedies in the mode of passion, he takes birth among those engaged in fruitiveactivities; and when one dies in the modeof ignorance, he takes birth in the animal kingdom. SLOKA 18 Thosesituated in the mode of goodness gradually go upward to the higher planets;those in the mode of passion live on the earthly planets; and those in theabominable mode of ignorance go down to the hellish worlds. SLOKA 20 When theembodied being is able to transcend these three modes associated with thematerial body, he can become free from birth, death, old age and theirdistresses and can enjoy nectar even in this life. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas. The branches of this tree extend downwardand upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature. The twigs are theobjects of the senses. This tree also has roots going down, and these are boundto the fruitive actions of human society. The real form of this tree cannot beperceived in this world. Noone can understand where it ends, where it begins, or where its foundation is. Butwith determination one must cut down this strongly rooted tree with the weaponof detachment. Thereafter, one must seek that place from which, having gone,one never returns, and there surrender to that Supreme Personality of Godheadfrom whom everything began and from whom everything has extended since timeimmemorial.
