AGRICULTURE- KRISHI- VYAVASAYAM.
In 1967 November onDeepavali day a Tamil film was released with name Vyavasayi acted by MGR and KR Vijaya inHero and heroine rolls respectively. It was a successful film. I was working in Tamilnadu at that time. On seeing the film I could understand inTamilnadu Vyavasayammeant Agriculture. In Malayalam VYAVASAYAM meant Industry. For agriculture, the word is KRISHIin Malayalam. In Tamil the word Thozhil is used to mean industry. In recent years I haveseen some people domesticate 6-7 cows and sell products like milk, curd, butter, ghee etc. They are named as KSHEERA KARSHAKAN in Kerala. Earlier itwas Palkachavadakkaran in Malayalam. Gradual changes in themeaning of words and contexts appear in course of time in all languages. At one time Malayalam words Achhi and Nair meant husband andwife and were very decent. However nowadays these words are least used and notfelt so decent among many. People prefer using words Bharya and Bharthavu in Malayalam, though theyare Sanskrit words. There are many people interested inAgriculture. Through generations they do agriculture. There are agriculturalcolleges and many after studying comes with innovative ideas in Agriculture. Many like to have agriculture as their profession after graduation and post-graduation. They physically like to work rather thansupervising. We can see such persons in the Karshika rangam program of Kerala Doordarshan.Similar programs are in Pothigai Tamil channel also. In North India many afterstudy take their profession as agriculture. I have read about a person who converted barren ground of about 30-40 acres to wet land and startedagriculture a few years back. Many ofthe items like cumin, mustard, wheat, Basmati rice etc. are produced more in north India. It comes to my remembranceof a person completed his law degree and after continuing as Lawyer for very shortperiod and took up the profession as abuilder in Trivandrum. A very successful builder. His brother in law was myAssistant engineer while working atTrivandrum. But there are few whobelieve something like - Pathayam Perum, Chakki kutthum, Amma veikkum, Jnanunnum. (The granary will deliver paddy, servant lady will make it rice, mother will cook and I WILL EAT). Olden days it meantsimply idling people. In the presentcontext it does not mean, totally idling, but will do only easy works for a short time. Probably agenetic nature. While working on soil Mother earth Goddess gives immunity to the persons from bacteria, worms, dirt etc. More overphysical strength to work is gained by continued working. So the saying- Nithya thozhilabhyasam continued working gives easiness .In boyhood days I used tohelp father along with brothers in cultivationin our land . Later we went for jobs, the brother in home gave the land to another person tocultivate as Paattam (lease). Today situation haschanged. Many live in flats or small grounds and towns and cities. Largecultivation area is in rural villages only. It is also with very rich havingvast area in city, they cultivate different vegetables, and mostly used by themselves. Agricultural products are a must for our survival. I recollect a periodwith money inflow from foreign countries, with less agricultural produce in myhome state Kerala. The moment items like Banana, spinach etc. arrive in weeklymarket paying through the nose, therich purchased them in Kerala. Today that condition is notthere. On those days it was usual comment- Cheerayellam panakkarkku( Spinach is for the rich) There are differentmethods of cultivations with its own positives and negatives. Alwayscultivation cannot go profitable. There could be losses due to naturalcalamities. Some people directly employ workers and look after theiragriculture. These people involve by working with the employees. Sometimestheir quantum may be lesser on compulsion by workers telling that he shouldonly guide. Film star Mohanlal is an example. I have seen through you-tube hiscultivation in the landed property surrounding his home in Ernakulam. Some people give the landfor Paattam(lease). In the case of paattam, the owner gets a % of whatever isproduced in the land as kind. In thecase of lease, the land can be taken back from the person, if his up keeping orcultivation is not satisfactory. Some produces comesautomatically. Not much care is required other than removing unnecessarygrowths. The Tamarind, the Jack fruit etc. are of the type. Some require lesserattention like mango trees, coconut trees, aracanut trees etc. They requiremanure, watering etc. occasionally. Some produces require constant care likepaddy, vegetables etc. But the producecomes from the plant. The labour, manure are the expense of the owner. If theowner is lucky by god’s grace he would get much more produce. Concentrated attention isrequired for spices, and the profit is also much more. But everywhere we cannotgrow what we desire. Earth will notbetray. On those days many parentshaving practically no job and managing with income from properties used to givetheir profession as Krishiwhile admitting children in school. With mechanical aids, cultivation is less difficult now. Whatever be the cultivation, physical labouris reduced more than 70% comparing to olden days. One of my officers wascommenting while popularising computer in 1990’s- The day is not far of when a computer will do allagricultural manual jobs. This is going to be in the near future. Iread recently a robot controlling herds of goats. The Goats too like therobots. Android Kunjappan is a success Malayalam film in which a robotassisting an old man in day today life. Concluding legend- Oncetwo persons agreed to have common cultivation. One of them was less intelligent. The other tried to make advantage of it.The agreement was made. The upper portion would be taken by the intelligent. The portion under the ground by theother. The intelligent decided the cultivation as Plantain. All the plantains were taken by theintelligent. The less intelligent was fooled . The less intelligentthought- He cannot be fooled every time. He said he will decide the cultivationthis time . The intelligent had to agree. He said, he will take this time alsowhat grows up thinking less intelligent cannot think much. The lessintelligent had consulted elders already for the cultivation depending upon intelegant’soption. He suddenly said- Cultivation is ELEPHANT YAM. Tit for tat. He took all elephantyams and gave leaves for the intelligent. Writer- R.
