Q1            Why does Indian Railways transportcoal in open containers? Isn't
it prone to rain and theft?

A1            Prashant Tiwari IndianRailways Enthusiast Tue

Coal transported by Indian railways in open coaches are prone to rain & theft
but not more than fire.

Yes, the biggest reason of transporting coal in open wagons is to protect it
from fire. If any wagon catches fire then it will be very easy tonotice by
anyone.

In closed wagons any fire will be noticable only when it is already toolate.

Considering other factors such as theft are taken into account, the railway’s
aim is to ensure that their wagons are safe in comparisonto the amount of coal
that may be theft and rain does not effect the quality ofcoal. It can be used
easily.

There were a couple of reasons. One is that in late antiquity/the earlyMiddle
Ages, demand for large, elaborate stone buildings, the kinds for whichconcrete
is a reasonable choice, crashed.

The economic andpolitical collapse at the end of the western empire meant that
there wasn’t alarge, wealthy state and itswealthy officials getting together
the money for projects like that. Stoneconstruction declined with more wood and
earth taking its place, and wherepeople continued to build in stone they
overwhelmingly used local materialsrather than shipping things in expensively
from elsewhere.

Speaking of which,“shipping things in from elsewhere” also became more
difficult. One of the key ingredients in concrete waspozzalana, a volcanic
material which sets into a hard substance when mixed withwater. There weren’t a
lot of known sources for it historically, and when theempire collapsed, the
political chaos of the times meant that it would havebeen that much more
difficult to export to whoever wanted it, even if theycould afford it.

Engineering andconstruction, then, were very much practical crafts. Masons and
builderslearned by doing under theinstruction of their masters, not from
textbooks. This means that if they weren’t making things from concrete, they
weren’tlearning about concrete, and so knowledge of the craft faded out over
afew generations, save for a few theoretical tibits passed on over
thegenerations. The idea of concrete—a pourable building material which setto
be as hard as stone, or nearly so—wasn’t difficult to come up with, but onceit
was reinvented with the creation of a synthetic mortar inthe 19th century, all
the techniques had to be invented all overagain as well.

Q4            I discovered my whole house is wiredwith aluminum wiring. As I
want to extend a couple circuits for outside outletscan I use copper tied in
with the aluminum wiring and then use copper onlyoutlets outside?

A4            Loring Chien electricalengineer and audiophile for 45 years
Updated Sun

I am an electrical engineer. If faced with a house of Aluminum wiring Iwould
call a good, well qualified licensed, older electrician to deal with theproblem
and thank you yes, also check the rest of the house for issues. He should be
able togive you some ways to deal with the additional circuits issues. Older
becausehe will have seen these before. A young guy will possibly not haveseen
aluminum wiring in his lifetime. As this stuff was in 70’s you arelooking for a
70+ year old electrician! At least screen them by asking hisexperience with
aluminum wiring.

I would also ask him a lot of questions as to how to periodically checkthe
house for potentially developing problems.

There are many veryspecific rules and equipment and special
techniques/procedures for safelyconnecting aluminum wiring. Frankly Aluminum
wiring turned out to be very problematicdecades ago. Not all, but many of these
resulted in fires and I wouldwant to sleep well in a house with aluminum
wiring. It only takes onebad/failed joint to burn down a house. It can now be
done safely with the rightcombination of components, terminations, gels and
techniques but there are noshortcuts you can or want to take.

I would also consider suing my house inspector at the time you bought thehouse;
a house with aluminum wiring should be a major drawback pointed out to
apotential buyer, a huge failing of the inspector.

Q5            How much money is required tomaintain a private plane?

A5            Joshua Gross frequenttraveller in the US, infrequent traveller
outside the US Mon

My friend owns a Cessna150, one of the cheapest aircraft to own and fly. It
only seats two people, flies about 100miles an hour, and has a range of about
300 miles. They haven't beenmanufactured in decades, and a used one that can be
flown will run you at least$25,000. Then you need a hangar and insurance; the
hangar price will depend onwhere you are. Figure at least a couple hundred a
month for both.

In addition, when (not if) you need repairs, they will be expensive. Myfriend
has a good friend who is a fully FAA-qualified airplane mechanic andcommercial
pilot. Recently, they upgraded the avionics, and spent almost$10,000 on that.
The plane currently isn't flying, because they needed to dosome repairs, and
the repairs seem to have either caused or exposed asignificant problem with the
engine leaking oil. That would probably run around$10,000 to repair when all is
said and done. I'm going to guess that he fliesbetween 10 and 20 hours a month,
but he loves it and it's worth it to him.

Now, you probably want to fly somewhere. Figure $20-$40 an hour in gas, plus
whatever you have to pay the FBO (fixed base operator, the company thatruns
private aviation services for the airport) for whatever services you use.

All of this is ignoring the cost to become a licensed pilot, which startsat
around $10,000, and if you want to be instrument rated, that's another$10,000.

Q6            What is the connection between anartery and a vein?

A6            Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Mar

Usually to get from anartery to a vein, blood has to pass through capillaries.
But not always; it can pass througharteriovenous anastomoses, thoroughfare
channels, or sinusoids in somecirculatory routes.

Q7            Why is everyone becoming selfish dayby day?

A7            Bhuvana Rameshwar marriedfor three decades 9h

Yes. People are becoming more and more selfish as time goes by . In the name of
mindingtheir own business or not interfering unnecessarily with others they
areactually becoming more and more self centred and selfish. Hiding themselves,
asif lost in a smart phone is now a good excuse to be oblivious of the outside
worldeven in a crowded train.

These are the reasons I can think of..As joint families broke up to giveway to
nuclear families

As cultures gave way to modern, Western culture

As social norms got broken by freedom

As many children, many cousins gave rise to single child, single cousin, single
uncle, single aunt

As happy families broke down and became single parent family

As jobs took people far away from home, parents, and extended family

As festivals and gatherings gave rise to party, booze and night life

As family trips changed to solo travel

As joint accounts became separate bank accounts

As helping others brought forth more trouble than satisfaction

As wanting to have what others have became rampant, peer pressure is nowan
excuse

As sharing, caring, helping, lending, repaying became lost words

As selfish parents brought up selfish children and the cycle continues

Each generation is becoming more selfish than the previousgeneration. Each one
is worried only about themselves, or their own family. Soonfamily members like
adult children do not care about their siblings or even oldretired parents in
need. Hoarding money is now a priority at the expense oflove, family and
relationships. Each one is only bothered about their needs, their new gadgets,
their holiday plans and new wardrobes. Where is the time, energy or money for
giving others? Some do not want to even take care of oldparents, leave alone
their health care.

Q8            Are there any trees or shrubs thatshouldn't be grown near a home
or in a yard based on superstition?

A8            The Secret Garden ofPets Victoria Ng Feb 25

In Chinese culture, they follow feng shui practices to help with familyhealth
and wealth. There are some trees tied in withunwanted energy or attracts
negative energies if they are not placed inspecific places. One such is the
mulberry tree. This fruit tree stains everything it touches, which includes
drive way or housewalls and fences. It is known to not bring positive energyif
its grown too close to the house.

t need to be far away like in the field, where a farm is located. This ofcourse
is base on feng shui and its teaching. Chinese tend to not grow this plant too
close or evenhave it around even. This is consider an omen where if you plant
onea funeral will be arriving shortly. This tree I have at home in the yard. I
donot believe it is tell tale reason for any bad luck.

The willow tree is alsoconsidered both positive and negative depending on where
you plant it. As trees come with different energies bothmale and female, it is
safe to say that the trees may need more sunshine ormore shade to be happy. I
love willow and I will grow this near a pond if Icould. This is just teachings
of my family passed down to me. I would like to grow plants thathas a positive
energy around it. When I go buy one and it feelsright I bring home. I sometimes
buy almost dead ones cheap, and try to rescuethe plant. Sometimes its too late,
and sometimes it springs up beautifully. Somethingto consider when you bring
plants home and how it may fit your lifestyle insideor outdoors.

Q9            Can lions survive a snake bite?

A9            Abraham Sukumar Studiedat Madras Medical College, Chennai Mon

This question reminds me of a video I saw years ago (1991). Like ourdomestic
cats, tigers and lions also repeatedly change the location of theirnew born for
their safety. In the video a lioness had just moved her cubs when she is
confronted by acobra that is resident at the new site. The cobra rears up and
bites thelioness.

The camera crew keeps up with the lioness that is affected by the poisonof the
cobra. Cobrasbelong to the family elapid the venom of which affects the
nerves. The Indian krait and the African mamba also belong to the same category
ofsnakes.

The lioness staggers along its mouth drooling saliva. Excessivesalivation
occurs in these cases. I have this happen in human patients. Their swallowing
muscles areparalysed by the venom and the patients will be scooping out saliva
from theiroral cavity. It is an indication for immediate administration
ofantivenin.

The camera crew is not sure why the lioness is moving away from itslitter. Soon
they know. It is making for a nearby stream to assuage its thirst. It drinks
deeply and lies down near the stream. A group of hyena pass by. Theysurround
the lioness, but they do not attack as hyenas normally would theirmortal enemy,
the lion. Some instinct probably for they go their way. Would thehyenas be
affected by the poison if they eat that lioness’ flesh? I do notknow.

The lioness recovers and gets back to where it had deposited its cubs. The cubs
are all dead. Maybe from neglect or maybe they were also bitten by theresident
cobra.

The camera crew follows the lioness back to its pride. Members of thepride
greet it with enthusiasm. The commentator ends with this poignantquestion. ‘How
much of the adventure that she had could the lioness haveconveyed to her
sisters and aunts?’

This 300 lb. lioness survivedthe bite. But it was a near thing.

I do not know if it was a National Geographic or some other production. Iwould
give much to see that video once again.

There are three ways you canuse less water.

The first way is to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, washing your
face or shaving. You can also replace the shower head with a lowflow one that
uses less water and nozzles. It will save you money on buyingwater too.

The second way is to replace your lawn mower with an electric onethat has
better features such as adjustable speed and power control so you canadjust it
according to the size of grass in front of your home.

The third way is by turning off the tap while brushing your teethor washing
your face, these actions take only seconds but they do use up a lotof water.I
hope this answer helps!

Q12         Is the current method of seatingpassengers in the aircraft the most
efficient mechanism in terms of savingspace?

A12          Keith White FormerRetired Old Scientist Updated 15h

No - standing people up would be much more efficient from a spaceperspective -
perhaps not quite as comfortable - especially on long haulflights…

I doubt that I would fly in such a plane with this seating

I would MUCH rather see “bunk beds” on planes - but the evacuation codeslimit
how these can be deployed.

Frankly - I’d be happy to have a lie flat bed in the cargo hold - with nowindow
- if it had good AC (especially if I could adjust it) and wascomfortable…
