Q1 What are the details of NaathaSampradaya?

A1 Nath-Sampradya started with Lord Shiva (Bhole-Nath)Initiating Lord
Dattatreya (Sripad Nath) who in turn Initiated many Others.

Matsyendranath/Matchindranath hadgot diksha when he was in the stomach of a
fish (Matsya) when Shiva wasinstructing Datta. Matsyendra Nath then initiated
GorakhNath who later becamethe foremost exponent of the Nath Philosophy.

Gorakhnath was the one of thegreatest tantrik the world has ever seen. Tantrik
path has 2 modes, one issoumya and one is aghori.

The somya use very mild mantrasand tantras to evoke the various powers of
Nature while the Vaam-panthi(aghori)do all sorts of 'forbidden' things like
resorting to alcohol, drugs, sex, nonveg food etc.

Gorakhnath laid the foundationfor the expansion of the Naths. So every tantrik
is not an "aghori'.

GorakhNath had the knowledge ofboth these paths and he initiated disciples
according to their attitudes.

Tamasic were given aghori pathwhile sattvic were given Soumya paths.

Still the highest tantra in theNath Philosophy is the Tantra of
Raj-yoga(Vivekananda has written a book on it)and Kriya-Yoga (Lahari Mahashaya
- Yukteshwar Giri - Paramhans Yoganandaorder).

So even after all acquiring ofthe powers a Nath Yogi has to finally resort to
the above two Tantras (methods) to attain Salvation.

Nath Sampradaya infact includesall the Hindu Philosophies...

some Nath sampradayis are Bhaktaslike Gyaneshwar who set up the Warakari Sect
in Maharashtra that worshipsPanduranga.

some Naths worship Shiva, someKrishna...So you can see  that NathSampradaya is
actually all accepting.

For a Nath-Yogi nothing isimpossible in the universe for he experiences God
through all angles as that ofa Bhakta because Guru-Bhakti is the highest Bhakti
in Naths, as Nature becauseTantriks invoke the powers of Nature, as Alakh
Niranjan - the foremost advaitaprinciple, as Karma - Helping the needy is a vow
that a Nath takes and all.

Please do not mistake naths forAghori Tantriks. Tantra literally means
Technology or Method.

Q3 What are the rules of takingoil bath and details of oil bath?

A3 Known as 'yeNNai shasthram', this stipulates the daysand thithis for taking
oil bath. The days differ for men and women and there isa sloka for each gender
to be recited, invoking the blessings of some greatsouls of yore, while
applying oil on the head.

For men (seven names), it is:-

Ashwthamo Balir VyasoHanumanshcha VibhishaNah, Krupah Parashuramashcha,
Saptaite Chiranjivinaah.

For women (five names), it is :-

Ahalya Draupadi Sita TaraMandodari tatha Panchakanyaah smarennityam mahaapataka
naashanam.

The rationale for oil bath:-Usually thaila snanam (oil bath) is supposed to
make one tired. There are days prescribed inastrological texts for taking
thaila snanam, so that the person will not becomeweak or tired after the snanam.

First of all why should one gettired after oil bath?

It is said as per Ayur veda thatthe vital energy in body such asvatha, kapah
etc must be balanced for goodhealth. Ayur veda treats a person on the
assumption of disturbance to any oneof the 5 vital elements in the body and
making correctives to them. It is saidwhen one takes oil bath, the balance of
these is upset in the body. One canfeel it also. Usually after an oil bath, one
will feel sleepy.

Sleepiness is associated withplanet Saturn in astrology. The day of Saturn is a
day to take rest. It isideal to have weekly holiday on Saturday and not on Sun
day. (Sun day will makeone fully vigorous and active like the Sun. The days
were named only on thebasis of the attributes of the planets that influence the
day by rising as thefirst hora at sunrise)

Taking oil bath on Saturday bestsuits the nature of the day influenced so, by
Saturn. As per astrology, chathurthasi is ideal for oil bath.

In a week Saturday is ideal foroil bath for men and Friday for women. It is
also said oil bath in theafternoon of Fri day is good.

One commonality in all these isthat Saturn, the ayush kaarakan is ruling
Chathurthasi (rikhtha thithi) andsaturday. Friday is ruled by Indra which also
benefits one withchiranjeevithwam.

So the days chosen for oil bathare those ruled by planets that give long life,
to offset the supposed fall inthe balance of vital  energies of thebody.

(Note:- If the oil bath is takenalong with other other ingredients such as
vaasanaadhi dravyams, mustard oiletc, no dosham of or specification of day or
thithi is required as per texts. This includes taking bath of heated oil. This
makes us infer that there is norestriction for shampoo snanam!)

The slokas For men:-

Ashwthamo Balir Vyaso HanumanshchaVibhishaNah, Krupah Parashuramashcha,Saptaite
Chiranjivinaah.

The invocation for men includes 7men who are all supposed to be chiranjeevis.
Perhaps the purpose is to of seekthe blessings of Ashwathama, Bali, Vyasa,
Hanuman, Vibheeshana, Krupa and Parashuramaso that one lives a long life.

Ashwatthama is said to live forever. Bali who is supposed to become the Indra
of the next Manvanthra, is said to live evennow in Patala. Vyasa is always
there at every point of time. Hanuman willcontinue to be in this world as long
as Rama nama is recited. Vibheeshana isalso said to be blessed with
chiranjeevithwam. As per Ithihasa, Krupacharya andParashurama also are
chiranjeevis.

Perhaps by invoking their names, one is blessed to live long. Perhaps this
invoking is done while taking oilbath as oil bath disturbs the vital energies
of life.

For women:-

Ahalya Draupadi Sita TaraMandodari tatha

Panchakanyaah smarennityammahaapataka naashanam.

The women mentioned here areAhalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara and Mandodari, called
as Pancha kanyas (!) aresupposed to destroy sins.

Tips from sages on oil bath:-

Bharadvaja says :- Oil bathshould be taken on the tithi and the days
prescribed. Then it gives strength and health.Children, the sick people, and
elders should take oil-bath and regular bath inwarm water, at a convenient
time. They are exempted from the rules.

Deepavali Bath-In the darkfortnight of Ashwina month, on the fourteenth day,
early in the morning, oil should be appliedon the body and bath taken in warm
water. This is Deepavali bath.

When ashwaja krishna chadurthasi [Narakachaturthi day] fallson a Sunday when
the star Swathi is ruling, scented oilbath should be takenearly in the morning
by those who wish for prosperity. Take bath in warm water. On Deepvali day,
Lakshmi lives in oil and Ganga lives in warm water. This bathremoves bad luck.
After the bath, wear new dress and jewels.
