Q2   Why in Indiavehicle insurance is mandatory? Whereas life insurance of the
driver is notmandatory?

A2            Prasanna BhaleraoM. Sc. inElectronics & Physics, Fergusson
College, Pune17h

There is a slightmisunderstanding here.

In India, as wellas everywhere else in the world, 3rd party insurance is
mandatory. 3rd party insurance covers damage to life and property ofothers (3rd
party) if you run into an accident. Your insurance paysfor the damage and loss.

Comprehensiveinsurance covers own vehicle damage in addition to 3rd party. In
India, we prefer this because, insurance claim is a lengthy and tediousprocess.
If you are not at fault, we would need to claim damages from theperson who is
at fault, from his insurance. A police FIR is required and thepolice determine
who is at fault. The other party must be present. More oftenthan not, we are
the one's who are usually at fault. 3rd party insurance won'tcover damage to
your own vehicle if we are at fault.

Driver andpassenger insurance is optional because these people may already be
having own(separate) insurance.

Q3            Whywasn't there 100 seconds to the minute, and 100 minutes to the
hour, and shouldit have been?

A3            Krister Sundelin E-learning Producer(2020–present)Mon

Q: Why wasn't there100 seconds to the minute, and 100 minutes to the hour,

A: Blame the Babylonians. They invented the 360 degree circle, the 12 hour days,
and the division ofthose into 60 minutes. Andthey did so because they used
fractions, not decimals. If you have not yetinvented decimals, fractions are
infinitely more useful.

“And why is that important?” Well, try todivide 100 with as many numbers as
you can. Eventually, you find out that youcan only evenly divide 100 by 2, 4,
5, 10, 25 and 50. Compare that to 60, ahighly divisible number. You can divide
it by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and30.

And that isimportant if you don’t have calculators doing the calculations for
you, and youhave to do it yourself in your head.

It is not by chance that we’re still talking aboutdozens, or 60 minutes or 360
degrees. They aresimply simpler to use. I even admit (as a European using SI
units) thatImperial units in some cases are more intuitive in everyday
situations. Perhapsnot in scientific situations where powers are much easier to
do in a decimalsystem, but definitely when getting a 2x4 for building a shed in
the garden.

Q: and should it have been? A: Well, the French tried itafter the Revolution,
and subsequently dropped the idea.

Q4            Is itokay to use hand soap for your clothes if you ran out of
detergent for thewashing machine?

A4            C.S. Friedman, Costume Designer andHistorian Answered 39m ago

Yup. Most of thecleaning action is done by the water. Tests comparing clothes
washed in soap vs. those washedin plain water found very little difference. The
primary purpose ofthe soap is to help release grease and oil from the clothing
to it can bewashed away. Hand soap won’t do that as well, as detergent, butit
won’t hurt.

My note- I recollect in my boyhood days manyused LUX toilet soap as washing
soap also. If forgot to carry many usedLifebuoy toilet soap instead of Sunlight
washing soap for washing clothes also

Q6            Willmosquitoes breed in a small fish pond, or will the fish
consume the mosquitolarvae? The fish are overgrown goldfish.

A6            Ken Saladin Textbook author andprofessor emeritus May 20

The best thing forcontrolling mosquitoes in a small pond is to add some
Gambusia, also known as mosquito fish. They’re cheap, small, breed rapidly,
andhave a ravenous appetite for mosquito larvae.

Q7            Why doelectrical appliances draw more current during low voltage?
Will it have aneffect on appliances?

A7            Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now

I am trying toanswer the question. The equipment has a constant wattage. By
ohm’ law

W=V x I .Voltage islow. So to achieve W, I has to more. Hence more current is
drawn.

However drawing more current is difficult in practice.Hence equipment like air
conditioner trip during low voltage.

Q8            Why doIndian streets have so many wires hanging overhead? What
happens to the wiresin more developed countries?

A8            Gopala Krishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answered justnow

I am from India,Chennai. Once telecom wires were carried on poles on one side
of the road andelectricity wires were taken on the opposite side. These telecom
wires at thattime were many about 30-40 sometimes. Now most of the lines are
takenunderground in cities. In the period of mobiles, still many use land phone
forthe simple reason, in case of tower failure ONLY LAND LINESHELP.

Though efforts arebeing made to carry power lines through streets by
underground cable, and raiseat poles, the works are completed only partially.
Most of thehanging cables are DATA CABLES BY private operators, and private
CABLE TVoperator wires. One can observe these wires are insulated. They do not
properly maintaintheir system.

Q9            Why areLondon Underground carriages so small?

A9            Nicholas Stone Lives in London(1993–present)Wed

London Undergroundcarriages are so small because they need to fit into tunnels,
many of which were built between 1863and 1930. Their size and profile gives the
service its widely usedname - the Tube.

Many of the tunnelswere built with manual labour, shovels and digging. They
were dug in an age of steam locomotives andhorse drawn power. There were no
tunnel borrowing machines, no laserguided instruments and no government money.
Private companies raising money to build the lines. Theresult were tunnels with
smaller profile and narrow carriages.

The exception aresub surface lines of today’s Circle, Hammersmith & City,
District andMetropolitan lines which were built with cut and cover methods.
Streets weredug up, trenches cut, track laid and the streets covered again on
top of thenew works.

The Victorian line was the first line of the post war -with more generous
tunnel profiles to reduce resistance. The Elizabeth line tunnels through central
London accommodate full size trains.

A new train for theGlasgow subway in Scotland. The carriages have an even
smaller profile than theLondon Underground and operate on a narrow gauge track
of 1,219 mm. Credit BBCnews.

Other cityunderground lines have similar smaller carriages - including the even
narrowerGlasgow Subway with a narrow 1,129 rail gauge. Budapest’s kisföldalatti
(littleunderground) line 1 is also noted for its smaller carriages. This line
wasopened in 1896, the world’s third oldest.

Q10         Why issheep shearing not considered animal cruelty?

A10          Claire Jordan Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper May 25

Because most breeds of domestic sheep do not moultnaturally, so if they aren’t
shorn everyyear their fleece builds up until it causes serious health problems.

Arguably,it was cruel of our ancestors to breed sheep that can’t moult their
own fleeces. But we can’t go back in time and undo it: here and now, we have to
either shearmost breeds of sheep, or kill them, because leaving them alive but
not shearingthem *would* be cruel.
